Big Heart Banquet

Each year in the state of Michigan thousands of people from all walks of life volunteer their time to allow people with all forms mental retardation and developmental disabilities to participate in Michigan Special Olympics. Of all the huggers, officials, timers, medal awarders and helper volunteers, the most important volunteers would have to be the coaches. Without them, the athletes would have no one to teach, help, cajole or encourage them to be all they can be. For many of these people, coaching is a year round commitment in addition to their career. The Michigan Area of Civitan honors these coaches at its annual Big Heart Banquet to show appreciation for all they do for the athletes.

The Area Directors of Special Olympics of Michigan (SOMI) obtain a nominee for each Area's coach of the year.  Civitans, with the help of SOMI Staff, review the nominations and select one "Civitan Coach of the Year" for all of Michigan.  All nominated coaches and their guest are invited to attend the Big Heart Banquet and enjoy an evening stay at the hotel at Civitan's expense.  Each coach receives a plaque engraved with their name and Area with a special plaque for the Michigan Civitan Coach of the Year.
