What is Civitan
The purpose of Civitan is to serve the community. This is done by fulfilling human needs that are not met by other organizations or by individual efforts. Needs that are best met through organized group action are prime candidates for Civitan service projects. In all they do, Civitans seek for themselves experiences that provide life direction, character building, leadership development and the satisfaction of helping others. As a result of this work, a Civitan typically finds a heightened sense of self-esteem and accomplishment.
Who are Civitans?
Civitans are everyday citizens who come together in communities throughout the world to make life better for their neighbors. Family, friends, neighbors and co-workers meet at local Civitan Clubs to socialize, learn and serve their communities. Starting with just a single club, and a vision for helping others, Civitan has grown to over 40,000 members in 24 countries, including youth and college programs. Founded on the most basic moral and spiritual; values, Civitan's commitment to identify and address needs in their communities have set them apart from other social and service organizations.
Membership
Membership in Civitan is open to anyone who is at least 18 years old and of good character. Every Civitan should understand and appreciate the mission of Civitan International and strive to promote the three principle goals of fellowship with one another, knowledge about the community at large, and service to our fellow man through the local Civitan club.
Civitans are dedicated to improving their communities through community service. On the international level, Civitan focuses on helping people with developmental disabilities. Civitan funds the Civitan International Research Center, a research and treatment facility for mental and developmental disabilities.
On the local level, clubs are involved in a variety of fund-raising and service projects. Civitan realizes the importance of offering its members opportunities for personal and professional development, as well as the opportunity to meet new friends and develop long-lasting friendships with people who share similar interest. At club meetings, Civitans hear from community, business and government leaders who provide informative and entertaining programs on the issues that affect Civitans and their families the most.
